The MMS Philosophy

Ilmu Mizan

The Science of Balance. Martial development as the harmonising of body, mind and character.

What Is Ilmu Mizan?

Ilmu means knowledge. Mizan means balance: the scale by which things are weighed justly. Ilmu Mizan is the MMS framework for martial development, in which physical skill, intellectual understanding and moral character are developed together and none is allowed to outweigh the others.

Performance and Practical Application

A technique can look excellent in demonstration and fail under pressure. Martial performance is the ability to display technique; practical application is the ability to use it, appropriately and with restraint, when it matters. MMS trains for application and treats performance as a by-product, not a goal.

Balance as Method

Balance appears at every scale of training: the physical balance of a stance, the tactical balance between attack and defence, and the personal balance between confidence and humility. The study of one illuminates the others.

The complete methodology of Ilmu Mizan is presented in the forthcoming book series. This page introduces its principles only.

Principles

The Scale of Development

Six principles that the practitioner keeps in balance.

  1. 01

    Discipline & Self-Mastery

Before one can control an encounter, one must control oneself, including appetite, temper and ego. Training is the daily practice of that control.

  2. 02

    Economy of Motion

Every unnecessary movement is time given to the opponent. Efficiency is not laziness; it is precision born of understanding.

  3. 03

    Structure, Timing & Distance

Technique fails without structure, arrives too late without timing, and is irrelevant without distance. These three govern every art MMS studies.

  4. 04

    Courage & Tawakkul

Courage is acting rightly despite fear. Tawakkul, reliance upon Allah after full preparation, frees the practitioner from paralysis and from recklessness alike.

  5. 05

    Humility

Arrogance blinds a practitioner to their own weaknesses. The humble student keeps learning; the arrogant one stops.

  6. 06

    Ability & Character

Technical skill without character is a danger to others. Character without skill cannot protect anyone. Mizan is the balance between the two.

The complete methodology is presented in the Ilmu Mizan book series.
